Scarborough Birders, formerly The Scalby Nabs Ornithological Group, was formed in 1993 by a group of birders to record the species occurring in the area surrounding Scarborough and District.
A local coastguard hut situated on the cliff top at Scalby Nabs, Burniston just north of Scarborough became vacant and in 1993 the lookout was taken over by The Scalby Nabs Ornithological Group, and it is now used as a bird watching station to study coastal migration.
Because of this base members have been attracted from all over the country and regularly visit, to either Sea watch, or to comb the surrounding cliff paths or bushes enjoying a walk along the Yorkshire coast, with some of the the best Sea watching north of Scarborough. It is ideally situated with a fantastic view of the sea for at least 180 degrees at an optimum height of just over 100 feet.
This lookout, built in 1927,was one of several along the Yorkshire coast which were regularly manned in bad weather. During World War II Long Nab was manned 24 hours a day by two coastguards. A mine shelter was built during The 1939-45 war to offer some protection in the event of enemy action
This area is part of The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, an outstanding coastline where special attention is given to care for its natural beauty and its wildlife, to help people enjoy the coast and to assist those who live and work here.
